Prof.
Åshild Fredriksen

Space Physics group

Hi,

More than 90% of the visible matter in space is made up of plasma, and I perform experiments with plasmas by creating them in Aurolab, the in-house plasma laboratory at the Dep. of Physics and Technology. This is the only active university laboratory for basic plasma science in Norway, and the research here is primarily focused on topics related to phenomena in the near-Earth plasmas, such as the solar wind and the ionosphere, as this activity is part of the research of the Space Physics group. In 2006, the construction of a new plasma device, Njord, was finalized. Photos from the construction process, which started spring 2005, can be seen elsewhere in these pages, and a description of Njord can be viewed here.
However, students trained in this laboratory will obtain experimental skills not only relevant to space plasmas, but also to industrial applications of plasma physics. The variety of such applications is huge, ranging from waste treatment and sterilization to micro-chips manufacturing. You can find out a lot more on the
web. In the menu to the left you can find out more about my activities as a plasma scientist.
