Welcome to the Computational Earth Observation and Machine Learning Laboratory (CEO-ML Lab).
The Lab is located at the Department of Physics and Technology at the University of Tromsø, Norway. The University of Tromsø is located at nearly 70 degrees north, making it the northermost university in the world.
The members of the CEO-ML Lab conduct nationally leading and internationally recognized research mainly in two inter-connected areas: 1) developing computational methods for solving earth observation problems, and 2) developing new machine learning techniques.
Some current and recent research areas and projects include:
- Information Theoretic Learning (ITL)
- Modeling of Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (POLSAR) Images
- Classification of POLSAR Images using Spectral Clustering and ITL
- Wavelet Speckle Filters
- Independent Component Analysis (ICA) for Texture Segmentation
- Neural Networks
A main characteristic of the CEO-ML Lab research is the development of advanced machine learning computing techniques specially tailored for solving important earth observation problems. Machine learning is an exciting research area which during the last decade has provided new and efficient solutions for long standing problems in many application domains.
Earth observation is an especially important research area, due to the present strong political focus on the northern regions including the Barents region, for example with respect to environmental issues and transport of oil and gas. It is therefore a strong need for improving capacity and competence in environmental monitoring and surveillance. The most effective method is earth observation from space. Norway is the country in the world having the best satellite coverage, both over land and on sea, and is therefore in a unique position thanks to the establishment of advanced satellite tracking stations in Tromsø. The CEO-ML Lab operates in close collaboration with Norut IT in Tromsø, a leading earth observation research institution.
